Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis is a condition which is characterized by redness itching swelling and rashes when skin come in contact to certain substances . It is not contagious but very uncomfortable . Contact dermatitis is immune system related reaction to allergens or irritant substances.

Contact dermatitis can be catagorized in to two main types depend on underlying causes.

 

Types of contact dermatitis:

 

1-Irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) : Icd is caused by direct exposure of irritants to skin surface they may be certain chemicals, solvents, detergents, acids, alkalis, and other compounds that can damage the skin upon contact.

 

Causes of irritant contact dermatitis:

 

Chemicals: Harsh cleaning agents, solvents, acids, and alkalis.


Soaps and Detergents: Especially those with strong fragrances .


Certain Fabrics: Rough or scratchy fabrics, and wearing tight or wet clothing for long period.


Plants: Certain plants may cause irritation even in the absence of an allergic reaction.

 

2-Allergic contact dermatitis ( ACD): Allergic contact dermatitis occurs when immune system recognize certain substances which are not harmful for others but few person react to these one. Common allergens includes metals, fragrance, preservatives, certain plants (poison ivy), certain medications.


Causes of allergic contact dermatitis:


Nickel: Found in jewelry, belt buckles, and metal buttons.


Fragrances: Present in perfumes, soaps, lotions, and other personal care products.


Latex: Used in gloves, balloons, and certain medical devices.


Poison Ivy, Oak, and Sumac: Plants that contain an oily resin called urushiol.


Preservatives: Such as parabens and formaldehyde-releasing agents in cosmetics and

personal care products.


Other types are :


Photocontact Dermatitis: This occurs when a individual becomes allergenic or irritating only when exposed to sunlight.


Occupational Dermatitis: Some individuals may develop contact dermatitis due to exposure to irritants or allergens in the workplace


Perioral Dermatitis: This is a specific form of dermatitis that affects the skin around the mouth, eyes, and nose.

 

 

 

Symptoms of Contact dermatitis:


The symptoms of contact dermatitis can vary depending on the type of contact dermatitis (irritant or allergic) and individual factors. However, common symptoms include:


  • The skin of effected area become red and degree of redness depend on severity of reaction.

  •  Itching (pruritus): intense itching is one of the common symptoms of contact dermatitis.

  • Swelling and inflammation on effected area and the effected area may be painful.

  •   In contact dermatitis as barrier function of skin distruppted so in chronic cases

  •   Some individual feel burning sensation on effected area.

  •   Skin may develop blister that oozes especially in allergic dermatitis

 

 

Managment of Contact dermatitis: The management of contact dermatitis involves both prevention of further exposure from irritants and allergens and treatment of symptoms. Here are the few general approaches for managing contact dermatitis.

 

  •   The prime important things is to identify and avoid triggers using  protective clothes like gloves and adapt yourself to minimize the minimum exposure. In allergic contact dermatitis strict avoidance of the identified allergen is crucial.

  •   Regularly moisturize the affected skin to help restore and maintain the skin barrier.

  •   Applying cool compresses on the effected area to alleviate the symptoms of itching redness and swelling.

  •   Keep nails short to prevent the scratching because constant scratching leads to infection.
